What if what your saying upsets someone?

“I’m free to yell whatever i want to yell, and if you dont like it, SHUT UP” …Words from my teacher. Its called Freedom of Speech and that statement is in fact…True. Thats basically what we discussed on wednesday. People are free to say or yell whatever they feel or believe in and there will always be people who disagree with someones opinion…and thats how arguments start. We also talked about responsibility, for example, if you saw someone robbing your neighbor’s house, would you call the police? Even though it’s not your job, or your responsibility….but would you put the Good Samaritan rule in effect? I definitely would because i would want my neighbors to call the police if they someone breaking into my house. I saw or read a story about this or something similar. It was a while back , but it was a story about a girl in New York (i think) who got raped, but she was yelling really loud and all her neighbors closed there windows. I think this happened a long time ago, but when i heard that, i was upset because how could you not do something? ANYWAYS, he gave us some objectives, Enforce compliance with rules that foster competition and diversity. Build and continually update a solid factual and analytic foundation for media ownership regulation. Encourage the timely developement and deployment of digital services….so thats what went on in class on wednesday.

ethics….again

We are human and we carry our ethics with us.Monday evening, we continued our discussion on ethics. He named different kinds, like The Golden Mean by aristotle and he says, moderation best serves the individual between extremes. Our the Categorical Imperative by Immanuel Kant aka Absolute Ethics. Universal application of principles…What is right for one is right for all. What is right for one situation is right for all situations of similar consequences. He talked about The Principle of Utility by John Stuart Mill and he says, The greatest good for the greatest number of people. And he gave some examples of that quote such as. Tobacco ads, gun control, and health care. The veil of Ignorance was another one we talked about by John Rawls and he says. Justice emerges when social differentiations are eliminated in the process of negotiation. And we can’t forget the Christian Ethic aka The Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. These are some of what we discussed on Monday. We then viewed a video about how journalist need to feel for whoever they are interviewing. Basically you can’t just interview a individual who just lost a loved one without feeling. Lines do need to be drawn.

Do you trust the Ethics of the News Cast…??

Thursday evening, he showed us a website we can use to make presentations. Kind of like PowerPoint but a little bit more advance. Glad he showed us that because i actually hate using PowerPoint. Only because it’s so boring. But the main point of class on Thursday was Ethics. He had us look online for codes of ethics. Some were hard to find, others easy. But the question still remains, do we trust them? Ethics is something we can talk about for days….i’m assuming the next few blogs will, in fact, be about ethics…:)

Nowcast…..

So i walked into class on monday and see everybody’s head down, writing on a piece of paper. I had no idea we had a quiz so i walked to my seat shocked. Must have been a crazy weekend for me to forget BUT after the quiz was “taken” we just talked about “NOWCAST” and changes to it, changes to the logo etc. The new Logo was nice, but thats about it for monday night. Now…lets see how I did on the quiz……

On thursday, we talked about different websites where people post there thoughts all the time like on tweetdeck, which is another app. for twitter that i had no idea about. He also talked about picnik, facebook, utterli, and now cast at san antonio. While we were on his tweetdeck, we noticed how to get an invite to google wave..! Good Luck

Media is changing….

We are media….the teacher mentioned to us on monday that media has changed very much and that he wouldnt be teaching like this years ago, simply because things have changed. As we discussed more about media changing, we viewed a video of Seth Godin and it was titled…”the tribes we lead”…..Godin argues the internet has ended mass marketing and revived a human social unit from the distant past tribes. Founded on shared ideas and values, “tribes give ordinary people the power to lead and to make big change” and Godin urges us to do so. It was a video that did catch my attention because i believe the quoted sentence above is very much true. Closer to the end of class, we talked about “starting a movement” and how we can do so….. through blogs, twitter and a website that i’ve never heard of, but it is twitter…i guess…”Twazzup”…You can discuss anything from Global Warming to the movie Paranormal Activity, people are always on,sharing their ideas..which is pretty cool ….Before we left, he said one thing, “We are going to be policing ourselves”……

Kid in Hot-Air Balloon?

I got on msn one day and i look at the news and its states that a young boy may be missing in a hotair balloon which made me click on the link for more information. We discussed this in class and basically what happened was that the young boy supposedly climbed into the hot-air balloon and it took off. So the camera was just following a hot-air balloon float across land. Later they find out that the young boy was in the attic the whole time! It was a joke. Wasnt very funny to me, but the news and the internet made it a big issue, when it was just a balloon and no boy. We continued to talk about advertisement and commercials. I learned that four effects of ads are to make people aware of goods, give price information, provides quality information, and identifies with people and activities. for example, a beer ad, at a party, just having a good time. College students maybe? Also, social cost of advertising is manipulation of spending behavior, influence on news, and influence on politics. He showed us about the new ”google wave” and how he wanted an invite. google wave sound cool, hope to try it out. So we are still learning a lot about ads and how it persuades people to buy! Didnt know there was so much information, but happy to have now learned it! We have a quiz tonight…planning to do well!!

Test day..!

So last class we took a test and i know i did well..hopefully ….After we took the test, we discussed advertisements a little bit more and our teacher said a very interesting statement, im not sure if this is word for word but he said, “If we can persuade people by an advertisement, can we persuade people to do right?”…I believe he said that or something around it ..But it was interesting to me because its true, ads do persuade people. We actually try something out because of what an ad says. Later on in class we watched a video, i believe his name is Rory Sutherland…he was a funny guy…caught my attention.Basically he was just going on and on about ads and how they made some cereal diamond shaped instead of square shaped. The night was short because of the test, but still learned a few things. Looking forward to my test score

“SNL” and the Nobel Peace Prize

On Monday we briefly discussed how president Obama won the nobel peace prize. I didn’t have time to watch CNN for the past couple of days, but I did go online and see blogs that people have written about president Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. It was not a surprise when I read that a majority of people (from the website) did not agree with Obama winning the award. Its makes me think about our country. I know some people hate the fact that Obama is our president, but since he is the president of our country, why can’t we honor him and congratulate him on his acheivments. Although SNL states that he hasn’t done anything he promised. I think the things he promised will take time. Its not going to happen overnight. Sometimes I think people are just trying to find a reason to hate him, but I’m proud of our president and I think he is doing an awesome job and hopes he will continue to do so. Another thing he started talking about was how CNN is focused in SNL and how they made fun of the President. CNN is professional and real while SNL is simply a comedy show, and I have no idea why CNN has a news section on it, but I guess its news today. As class ended, we talked about ads that are memorable or “sticky”. For example, the apply directly on the head, head on commericials. Sometimes they make a tune or a saying for us to remember them, and unfortunatly, it works
